How Can I Practice Self-Care During the Holidays?

So how exactly do you practice self-care during the holidays when you are busy trying to juggle all your other commitments at this time of the year?

The key to proper self-care is actually finding the time to organize and plan a different type of holiday season than the norm which has your needs included. The problem is that most people over the holidays spend too much time worrying about family and friends that they forget about what they want and need.

Holiday self-care means putting aside some time for yourself to do the things that you love or that will help you feel good for the sake of your sanity.

To make this happen we have created our 12 days of Christmas self-care challenge that gives you some ideas and suggestions of what you can do to help yourself do things differently this Christmas season.

Christmas Self-Care – Look After Your Sleep

What makes Christmas so stressful? Well, one of the problems is that people are so busy rushing around they neglect one of the most important things they can do which is getting a good nights sleep.

Christmas parties in the lead up to the big day and additional tasks and chores all help to make us feel that we don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done. So you end up staying up late and waking up early and that starts to take its toll. Prioritise your sleep during our 12 days of Christmas Self-Care challenge and you will feel significantly better over the holiday season.

As we are talking about pampering and spending time doing things to help you why not indulge yourself and buy the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray? This is the perfect product to help you sleep like a baby as you breathe in the wonderful aroma that has been specially designed to help your mind to switch off at night.

Ways to Practice Self-Care at Christmas – Go Shopping To Buy Yourself a Gift

Whilst the holidays are thought of as a time to treat everyone else who says that you can’t do the same for yourself?

Buying your loved ones gifts is lovely to do but think about shopping for something that will make you happier or improve your life. Remember holiday self-care is important so you could spend your money on something to pamper yourself or alternatively something that saves you time or even a gift that just brings a smile to your face.

Self-love is not selfish it is a way of making sure that your needs are met as well as everyone else’s.

Mindful Holiday Self-Care – Take Time for Meditation

The holiday season can be frantic and feel like a non-stop whirlwind of shopping, cleaning, cooking, partying and running around trying to get a million things done at once. This is going to make every day seem stressful and make you feel on edge and frazzled.

A great way to take some time out for self-care is to find the time for meditation in order to slow your body and your brain down so it can relax.

Meditation can be done just about anywhere. We recommend you buy a meditation cushion and place it in a quiet spot in your home where you can use it every day to relax and unwind.

Take Care of Yourself at Xmas – Exercise in The Fresh Air

Christmas self-care should also where possible involve getting out in the fresh air to take some exercise. That could be going for a walk, bike ride or even a run if you are up to it.

Being outside in nature is good for your mental health and mood especially in the winter months when there is little sunshine. Getting some much-needed light can make a difference in the way that you feel and can help with SAD syndrome.

If you are going for a walk try and practice some mindfulness whilst you are outside. Mindful walking is a great way to help you clear your head and think about the now rather than worrying about the future.

Mindful Thoughts for Walkers is a great book to help you with this practice if you want to know more.

Look After Your Well-Being During the Holidays – Meet a Friend for a Coffee

Whilst the holiday season is seen as family time sometimes you just need to escape and meet someone from outside that circle.

Phone a friend and escape for a few hours to a local coffee shop for a catch-up and have a good chat about anything but the holiday preparation. Hopefully, your friend will help to lift your spirits and raise a smile so that when you get back home you feel refreshed and ready to tackle whatever you need to do.

Self-Care During the Holidays – Pamper Your Body

Next in our 12 days of Christmas self-care challenge think about spending some time over the holiday season to pamper yourself and your body.

Self-love and self-care through looking after yourself and making yourself feel good are important and shouldn’t be neglected. Take a long bath and then spend some quality time alone pampering yourself.

Some great pampering ideas include giving yourself a manicure or pedicure, exfoliating, using body lotion or buying a facial steamer to use.

Protect Your Mental and Physical Health at Christmas – Write a Gratitude Diary

Sometimes we might feel that our lives are difficult or problematic but when we take a step back to really assess what we have our entire perspective can change.

Think about using a gratitude diary to write down what you have to be thankful for in your life to help with self-care. When the ideas start to flow from pen to paper you should start to recognise that you have a considerable list of items that can help to change your mood.

Practice Positive Self-Care – Get a Massage

When we are stressed we tend to tense our muscles which leads to aches and pains and headaches. Booking a good massage can really help to loosen those tight muscles and free you from any niggling tension that could be causing a problem.

If you don’t have a spa or beauty salon nearby that offers them then the next best thing is an Electronic Shiatsu Neck and Back Massager that you can use at home. This helps to knead all those tight knots away so you feel better.

Simple Winter Self-Care – Read a Book Under a Blanket

Sometimes the best holiday self-care ideas are simple steps that you can take incredibly easily. This tips is one of those as all you need to do is find a quiet spot to read a book curled under a warm blanket.

November and December aren’t exactly the warmest months in the Northern Hemisphere so using a cosy blanket is always a great solution to keep you warm. Whilst a good book can help you switch your mind off so that you can relax and drift off somewhere else.

Christmas Self-Care Tips – Take a Night Off From Cooking

If you are fed up of spending Christmas and the holiday season slaving over a hot stove then it’s time to stop and take a break. There is nothing in the holiday rule book that says you need to be cooking all the time and working on menus to prove your worth.

Down your tools for one night, take the evening off and order a take out for yourself and whoever else may be around. Self-care at Christmas time comes in all different forms and this is a perfect idea if all that cooking has finally got to you.

Pamper Yourself – Step Off Social Media

Finally the last of our 12 days of Christmas self-care challenge is to step off social media and turn off your phone and switch off completely.

Social media in particular can be a nightmare in the holidays as people put up their pictures of their perfect tablescapes and beautifully decorated homes. It can be easy to feel like a failure if you feel that you haven’t done the same.

Remember that social media only shows the very best life filtered pictures to others and hardly ever shows the reality. Don’t beat yourself up for not being perfect because nobody is. Instead switch off your devices, grab yourself a drink and spend time with your loved ones and enjoy the holiday season and Christmas day.
