What is Resilience?
So what exactly is resilience? The Oxford English Dictionary states that resilience “is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties”. It is a physical and mental toughness that allows you to navigate problems and keep on pushing through even if things go wrong. You can bet that most of the great leaders, sports stars or billionaires in the world have this key skill.
Without resilience, you are more likely to give up on what you start and stay in your safety zone. This means you may never achieve your goals or dreams because a part of you will always be worried about what may go wrong.

Thousands if not millions of people have been in similar situations to this. It can be so easy to go back to what is familiar when you have experienced a big knockback like this but what if you are resilient?
A resilient person will still come out of the interview knowing that those things didn’t go well but they will think slightly differently. They may research some of the questions they didn’t know so they could give better answers in the future. They might decide to do some extra training to make them more employable. They may practice interview techniques with their friends and family to make them better prepared. Then when they are ready they apply for a similar role and walk into that interview room armed with more knowledge and answers so now they have a chance of success.
You can guarantee that the person with resilience will eventually get the job of their dreams whilst those without the skill will stay stuck in their current roles.

Did you know that many of the most famous people in the world failed before they achieved success? These people managed to succeed because they kept on trying and never gave up. When you learn the same you can also start to change your life. Here are some people who you most definitely have heard of who failed before things started to go their way.
Walt Disney – Believe it or not he used to work on a newspaper but was fired. His editor famously said, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”
Michael Jordan – Was cut from his local high school basketball team by his coach. Jordan famously went on to say “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Oprah Winfrey – Was fired from her first job as an anchor in Baltimore because she was too invested in her stories.
Simon Cowell – At the age of 32 Simon was down to his last £5 and went back home to live with his parents. Now he is one of the richest celebrities in the world.
James Dyson – Made over 5,000 prototypes or his now world-beating vacuum cleaner over the course of 15 years. Yesterday he topped the UK’s Sunday Times Rich List with a net worth of 16.2 billion.
There are many more examples of how resilience can create success. If these celebrities had stopped trying then you would have never have heard of them.
Resilience in the Workplace
Resilience in the workplace is a skill that every company would like to teach their employees. The ability of a company’s managers and staff to think outside the box and deal with ongoing problems is hugely important to a companies success and profits.
Imagine you are working in a company and your production line develops a fault meaning that you might lose a million-pound order. You can be the supervisor or manager who just crumbles and lets the whole deal fail or you can start to do everything you can to get that deal working.
There is a famous story about Pacific Power and Light who supply power to the west coast of the United States. Every winter ice coats the power lines causing some of them to snap meaning that certain towns lost power. Each year workers would be sent out to shake the lines to try and remove the ice. The trips were dangerous and expensive but each year the same thing would happen until a group of consultants were hired.
During a brainstorming session, someone mentioned that helicopter blades created a downwash that removed the ice as they flew over. Eureka! Years of old thinking were immediately replaced by an easier and cheaper way of resolving the problem. Imagine having a group of employees who could always think out of the box and adapt their thinking to create success out of age-old problems.

It is also worth noting that your well-being can be improved with resilience. Let’s go back to the story of the person who failed the interview because of the awkward questions they were asked. Imagine how they felt when they had to go back to their old job with their hopes and dreams dashed. Without resilience, it can be easy to allow feels such as stress, anxiety or depression to take over.

Fear of failure or worry about not being good enough often keep people from performing at their best and impact their general well-being.
