How to Build Confidence at Work
Learning how to build confidence at work is essential if you are to get ahead and be noticed in your chosen career. Very rarely does a person who sits in the background get noticed, promoted or get the recognition they deserve. Being overlooked of course does nothing for your confidence levels and simply compounds the problem. In fact, it can sap your energy and give you work anxiety.
Importance of Confidence at Work
Why does confidence in the workplace matter so much? Well, these statistics show you why it matters so much. A recent survey showed that 75% of women lacked confidence in the workplace. Whilst another survey showed that a lack of confidence created problems asking for promotions, requesting time off and working with groups or public speaking.
Having confidence in the workplace is so important and here are the main reasons it matters so much.
Confidence Shows Trust
When you are confident and you are able to voice your opinions people will listen particularly your managers or clients. It shows them that you are able to do your job effectively and project knowledge and expertise. Employees who show they are capable and stand out from the crowd are likely to be trusted with more important tasks, accounts or clients.
Confidence Equals More Interesting or Complex Tasks
When you have a lack of confidence you have a tendency to not want to step outside your comfort zone. Staying in your lane means that after a while your job becomes dull and repetitive. Yet the worry about taking the next step keeps you stuck. When you build more confidence at work you are more willing to volunteer to do more complex jobs and take on more interesting projects.
Confidence Equals Promotion and Opportunity
When managers believe in you and see that you can make a difference in the workplace opportunity comes your way. In particular, confident people are more likely to be asked to apply for more senior roles. Equally, when you are more confident you are more likely to take a chance on asking for promotions without worrying about being rejected.
Confidence Means More Money
Having more confidence is also likely to mean more money in your bank account. Confident people get more promotions and are more willing to move to better jobs with more money. This can have a very large impact on your bank account.
Confidence Improves Your Well-Being
When you lack belief in yourself it creates anxiety, sleepless nights and even depression. All of these conditions impact your well-being. Even worse when you start to feel anxious or depressed it has a greater impact on your confidence creating a downward spiral. When you are confident, positive and in control, you are less likely to suffer from those issues.
Self Confidence Tips
So what can you do to increase your self-confidence? Here are just some of the things that we work on with our clients in our confidence coaching sessions.
Gently Push Your Boundaries – The key to creating ultimate self-confidence is pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. You don’t have to do this in one big leap but instead slowly push your boundaries. The more you do this without any problems the easier it will become.
Visualise Yourself Confident – When working with clients we use visualisation techniques to help them imagine acting confidently in certain situations. This technique can be incredibly powerful. In fact, elite sportspeople use this strategy all the time to imagine and then create success.
Dress the Part – When you dress right and walk into a room with your head held high you feel different and exude confidence. Walk into the same room in different clothes with your shoulders slumped and your head facing the floor and you have a totally different situation. Learn to be the person who wears their confidence externally as a form of armour.
Stop Listening to Your Inner Critic – We all have an inner voice that tells us negative things. It might say we are not good enough, that we can’t do it or we will fail. This inner critic is unreliable and often tells us these things because of one bad experience in the past (not hundreds). Stop focusing on the one bad event and look at all the positives.
Increase Your Knowledge – Knowledge is power so they say. If you feel that you are lacking in confidence in a certain area go away and learn more about that particular thing. When you have mastered it then it is so much easier to feel confident.
Work Out What Caused the Problem – Sometimes we help our clients to remember the original event that knocked their confidence. This can be a hugely important part of therapy as it allows them to rationalise what happened and look on the even with a new perspective. This can create seismic shifts in the way our clients think.
Train Yourself To Think Positively – Positive thinking is something that you can learn. The trick is to ignore the inner critic and instead train your brain to view the good in a situation. To make it easy for our clients we give them a Self Hypnosis for Confidence download that they can use at home to practice with daily.
Confidence Coaching
The great thing about confidence at work is that it can be learned. Forget any notions that you may have about being a shy person or an insular individual. You were not born that way. Something or someone came along to shake your confidence and belief in yourself. After that point, all that your mind has tried to do is prevent similar situations from occurring again. So to keep you safe or save you from embarrassment or failure your mind tries to keep you in what it thinks is a safe zone.
When we work with clients do a number of things. Firstly we ascertain what that comfort zone is and how anxious our clients are about moving outside it. We also try and figure out exactly what the anxious feelings are telling our clients. Knowing the exact problem helps us to direct our confidence coaching at the precise problem instead of guessing.
There is no one reason behind a lack of confidence but just some of the issues we see include:
- A fear of embarrassing themselves or being judged by others
- A fear of making a mistake and being told off
- A fear of failing
- A worry about a lack of control
- A fear of standing out in front of others
Confidence coaching helps to give you tips and strategies that can make a difference in the way you feel. When you understand the real reasons behind your problem it is easier to change the thought processes behind that particular problem.
