Self-Belief Definition

Collins dictionary defines self-belief as “confidence in your own abilities or judgement”. In other words, you believe that you have the skills and knowledge in your life to do what you need to do without fear, worry or doubt.

Having this self-belief attitude means that you feel empowered and have the confidence to do what you need no matter what the situation is. As an illustration, you would be happy making decisions at work as a manager because you would have the self-belief that you were doing the right thing.

Belief in Yourself

When you have belief in yourself it can make a world of difference to what you can achieve in life. It will impact your career, your relationships, your achievements and accomplishments.

Without a doubt, if you have self-belief you are going to have a more successful and rewarding life that someone without this thought. You are more likely to:

  • Ask for a Promotion
  • Attend an Interview
  • Approach a Future Partner
  • Run that Marathon
  • Take Calculated Risks
  • Work for Yourself
  • Travel the World
  • Try New Things

The list is endless when there is no self-doubt holding you back.

Self-Limiting Belief

The problem is that many of my clients have self-limiting beliefs. They have a negative self-critical voice in their minds that tells them they are not good enough, that they are going to fail or will look stupid if they try. This voice can stop you in your tracks and prevent you from even trying.

So why does the mind do this? Well, it wants to keep you in your comfort zone. At one point in your life, something happened to you that upset, frightened or embarrassed you and that day you learned a simple lesson. I never want that to happen to me again. From that point on you will have done everything in your power to prevent a similar situation occurring. The more you avoided similar situations the stronger that voice became.

As an example, one of my clients changed school when she was young. As the curriculum was slightly different the teachers made the little girl do extra lessons at lunchtime to catch up. The problem was they didn’t tell the girl the extra lessons were because of the curriculum differences instead she believed that she must be stupid to need the extra time with the teachers. Plus it felt like a punishment because all her friends were playing outside and she was stuck indoors. From that point on she believed that she was some way inferior to others.

This limiting belief stayed with her into adulthood until we began therapy and discovered the real reasons for her problem. With therapy for self-belief, she understood that actually there had never been anything wrong with her. This began to change her current belief systems and attitude.

How to Improve Self-Belief

I teach my clients how to develop self-belief day in and day out. There are some simple things that you can do to improve yours.

Visualisation

Learn to see yourself succeeding or achieving what you need to by using the power of visualisation. This tool is used by elite sports stars all the time and helps them to create success. Tiger Woods, for example, hired a hypnotherapist to help him overcome any doubts to success. You can to the same to see yourself achieving success or reaching a goal that may at first seem out of reach.

Pushing Boundaries

Anxiety, fear and worry make us want to stay within our comfort zones. The problem is that these zones are boring, safe and don’t allow us to stretch our abilities. Learning to push these boundary zones is a great way of building self-belief.

A simple illustration of this is with clients who have a fear of driving. I make them get in the car and drive to the end of their road and back multiple times. This soon becomes boring and doesn’t make them feel worried anymore. Then I get them to drive a little further. By the end of a month, they are able to start moving on to bigger roads and eventually they are driving without any fear at all. They just need to learn to keep on pushing their boundaries until that became their new normal.

Practice Makes Perfect

If you want to know how to develop self-belief then start with practice. If you do something over and over again it should get easier each time. When we know what we need to be doing and feel competent the self-doubt just vanishes. Go into a situation under-rehearsed or not knowing what to do and of course, you are going to feel anxious.

Learn to Embrace Failure or KnockBacks

Anyone who achieved something important didn’t immediately succeed on their first try. Stephen Hawking didn’t come up with his theories the very first time he studied. It took years of trying before he finally had something that he felt he could publish. Getting things wrong enabled him to learn and adapt his theories into his acclaimed finished work.

Be resilient and understand that failure is a great learning tool. Learn what went wrong and tweak what you are doing to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes the next time. Eventually, you will hit on success.

Self-Belief Hypnosis

Want to build self-belief then hypnotherapy can make a major difference to the way that you feel. It can help you to change old subconscious thinking patterns that are blocking you from success. A highly skilled analytical hypnotherapist can also help you to identify incidents from your past that may have created self-limiting beliefs. Having this information can help you to change your current thinking.

Self-Belief Affirmations

Affirmations can also help you to practice new ways of thinking. When they are repeated regularly instead of listening to the old self-critical voice they can make a difference. Here are just a few that you can use:

  • I am worthy
  • I believe in myself
  • I have the skills and abilities to achieve success
  • I am confident that I can do what I set out to do
  • I see obstacles as an opportunity to learn
  • I deserve success
  • I am motivated to push my boundaries
  • I will achieve what I set out to do
