Using a Self-Care Coach To Help Your Well-Being
Are you good at taking care of your needs? Do you put your health and wellbeing (both physical and mental) first or does everyone else take priority? If you are finding that you are neglecting the things that make you happy then you may need a self-care coach.
Self-care coaching is one of the latest ways of making sure that your health and happiness are prioritised but what exactly do self-care experts do?

Self-Care Coach Training
Firstly before we begin let’s look at the actual self-care certification that is needed to become a self-care coach. Well, actually there isn’t any! This is a big problem as therapists we are increasingly seeing bloggers advertising themselves as self-help gurus without any form of training or certification to back up their work. This is a big problem.
Think about it if you went to the doctor and found that instead of your usual expert you found there was a blogger there ready to diagnose you without any training how would you feel? My guess is that you would want to walk out the door and go somewhere else. Yet the internet is like the Wild West. People create websites all the time to make money and being a self-care coach is just one of the latest fads we are seeing online.
The reality is that if you need help with self-care prioritisation and mental wellness then you should probably replace the word self-care coach with therapist, counsellor or psychotherapist. This is because these people will have the right training to help you and have expertise in working with thousands of clients to assist their well-being.
Being a self-care coach and helping people to change their lifestyles so that they become happier and improve their mental health isn’t as simple as many writers on the internet would have you believe. This is because our minds and our moods are directly impacted by a huge number of activities that can throw us off balance. Tip the scales too far in a certain direction and it can cause everything from insomnia to anxiety and depression.
Anxiety and depression are not problems that should ever be tackled by someone without a background in mental health because dabbling can push that balance further out of whack and that can be extremely dangerous. A good self-care coach (therapist) however can help you to navigate areas where there is a problem without tipping things in the wrong direction.
In our self-care coaching sessions, we can look at a whole host of problems including:
- Panic Attacks
- Food Issues
- Lack of Motivation
- Confidence problems
- Fears and Phobias
By working with a person holistically we can help them to alter areas that aren’t working so that they feel more content, relaxed and in control.
What are the Four Categories of Self-Care?
A self-care coach will look at four main categories when working with a new client. They include:
- Emotional Self-Care
- Physical Self-Care
- Intellectual Self-Care
- Spiritual Self-Care
You can of course break down self-care into smaller different areas of wellness if you wish but these categories tend to be the obvious places to start. Each area is assessed in turn to see whether there are any problems and the self-help coach will then recommend things that can be done to improve any areas of concern.
What are Examples of Self-Care?
So let’s look at each of these areas, in turn, to discuss what they mean and what a self-care coach might suggest to help. Each of these areas makes up an important part of the self-care coaching programs that we offer. When each area in turn tends to get back into balance our clients feel happier.
Emotional -Self Care
This focuses on your mood and recommending activities that will make you happy whilst at the same time suggesting that you stop certain habits that aren’t working for you. This is a huge area and usually, we do a comprehensive assessment with our clients to discuss their emotional needs.
Our recommendations can be something as simple as meeting up with friends for a night out to stress-reducing activities that may really help prevent anxiety or panic attacks. Stress is one of the biggest problem areas for many people so learning how to manage the problem better is hugely important.
A simple way we can help our clients to reduce their stress levels and to feel more relaxed is by listening to our guided meditation for relaxation.
Most people when they think of physical self-care think about finding time for exercise or moving their bodies. This is certainly important and many of our clients may get asked about what they do to help their health and fitness. Exercise doesn’t have to be difficult. One of our favourite recommendations is walking to help get the body moving. If you want to up the intensity then think about nordic walking. You just need a set of nordic walking poles and a place to roam. Walking is a great exercise to improve your mental health.
There are of course many other activities that can help with exercise including yoga, cycling, swimming or even dancing. The key is finding something that makes you happy.
Physical self-care also encompasses activities such as how we treat our body and take care of ourselves. Pampering is one example that many of our clients neglect because they feel guilty about taking time out to just indulge themselves. Yet any form of time out to make ourselves happy reaps huge rewards when it comes to mental health. There should never be any guilt about taking time to take care of yourself and a self-care coach can help you to understand this.
Intellectual self-care revolves around two main themes. The first is doing things that improve your mindset and make you feel more positive. The second are activities that help you to expand your knowledge and involve learning new tasks and hobbies that make you happy.
A great example of the first type of intellectual self-care is the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is known to help you relax and stop worrying about what may happen in the future. There are so many ways that you can learn to be mindful but one of our favourite ways is with mindfulness cards. Use these daily to help you change your focus on the present and see how your mood changes for the better. Obviously, a self-care coach should be able to teach you mindfulness exercise as well.
Other forms of intellectual self-care involve hobbies to help us develop rather than staying static. When we are bored, feel stuck or are no longer actively keeping our minds occupied it can lead to anxiety and depression. Therefore it makes sense to do things that we enjoy but that also keep our minds busy. Self-care coaches work with you to find activities that might work for you.
One of the easiest forms of intellectual self-care is reading a good book. You could also take up activities such as crafting, sewing or even art to help yourself to grow your mindset. Just find something that absorbs you and makes you feel happy and fulfilled.
A Self-care coach will also look at your spiritual needs because they are important as well. This doesn’t have to just include religion. Whilst self-care coaches will of course respect any religious activities they also look at our areas where you can gain spiritual self-care.
We often talk to our clients about being involved in the local community as a way of helping others and making them feel more content as they give something back. Volunteering in general is a great way of looking after spiritual needs.
Why is Self-Care so Hard?
Even though all of the areas of self-care that we have mentioned look relatively straightforward most people find the idea of self-care quite difficult. So why exactly are self-care coaches needed to create positive changes?
Guilt – We have already touched on the fact that many people feel guilty at the idea of indulging their needs. They think they are selfish for prioritising themselves and feel that they will be judged negatively if they go and do their own thing. A self-care coach can help to change this mindset.
Can’t See the Wood from The Trees – When our clients first come to see us feeling burnt out, upset, stressed and anxious they often have absolutely no idea why. They find it difficult to take a step back from their lives and analyse what they have been doing to contribute to the problem. Self-care coaching can help to change their perspective.
Mental Health Issues – If you are anxious or depressed it can be hard to think rationally or alter your mindset because the other problems take over. As therapists, we work with our clients to help their mental health issues so that they can start the process of caring for themselves.
Stuck in a Rut – When we are stuck in a rut trying something new seems difficult. If you are guilty of coming home and sitting mindlessly in front of the television until bedtime you are not alone. We work with our clients to help them create a better balance.
Not Placing it as Important – Many of our clients have simply no idea why self-care might be important. It isn’t even something that has hit their radar because they are too busy working, dealing with their families or looking after their house. When self-care is explained in detail it can alter their priorities.
Self-Care Coach for Moms
We thought it was important to give a shout out to all you moms out there because we can guarantee that you are one of the biggest groups that tend to neglect your self-care. Looking after a house, work and children seems to leave little time for anything else leaving moms exhausted and neglecting their self-care needs.
A self-care coach for moms recognises the complexity of these competing life areas and tries to alter the balance so that your needs are also timetabled. For the family to work well you need to be happy. If you are unhappy then everyone else suffers as well which is why it is so important to make sure you are given some time for the things that you love.
A self-care coach does far much more than most people recognise and can make a big difference in your physical and mental health. Don’t keep on putting off your happiness when there are solutions to your problems and experts who can help you to feel better. You just need to take your first steps in the right direction to a new you.
