Therapy for Binge Eating Disorder
If you have a problem with binge eating I can almost guarantee that one of the first things you did to try and resolve the problem was go on a diet. I bet you thought I am eating too much and I need to lose weight and so you started trying to count calories or joining a slimming club. In almost every case the problem wasn’t solved which made you feel upset and so you tried again and again and again without success. It is usually only when my clients have exhausted every other method that they finally pick up the phone to ask for therapy for binge eating disorder.

Why Don’t People Think of Binge Eating Therapy?
Therapy is never the first thought in a person’s mind because the media and advertising have associated eating too much with weight loss. All those slimming clubs, diet supplements and exercise videos are big business. So millions of pounds each year are spent on trying to convince people that they need the latest thing to lose weight.
Heah if only you came to our club you could lose five stone. Perhaps try our expensive supplement which should make you feel less hungry. Surely you need to buy the latest celebs video on burning fat. Yet when those people are flogging your their latest products how many took the time to check with you whether you had an eating disorder?
Hell, even doctors get it wrong. A huge number of my clients have ended up in my clinic at the end of their tether because their GP just handed them a leaflet about dieting. No wonder my clients feel there is no way out of their eating issues.
Binge Eating is Not All About Food
So pay attention because here is something that people haven’t bothered to tell you. Binge eating disorder is not all about food. Food is just the symptom of other issues and in order to resolve the problem, you need help to understand what is bugging you. This is where therapy for Binge eating disorder can help.
Here are just some of the common reasons we see for binge eating but there are others as well:
- Loneliness
- Perfectionism
- Low Self-Esteem
- Feelings of not being good enough
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Over Dieting
If you don’t resolve the underlying issue then I can guarantee you that your problem will continue.
Can you Resolve Eating Disorders On Your Own?
Yes sure some people can but for the vast majority, it can be difficult to know where to start or what to do. When you are living your life it can be hard to get perspective and examine things impartially. As the saying goes “it is hard to see the wood from the trees”. The answer can sometimes be staring you in the face but you never see it.
Therapy for Binge eating disorder doesn’t always just point out the obvious it can also help your make connections which would never have even thought of. Hypnotherapy for binge eating for example takes you into a deep state of relaxation so that it is possible to get to whatever is going on at a subconscious level. When you have that eureka moment when it all makes sense it can create profound change. The therapist in this case is your guide and expert helping you to piece things together so that you can move on.
Yes, there are a large number of binge eating books out there that can help and are worth buying if you want to try a cheaper route first. We also have a Stop Binge Eating self-hypnosis audio download that you can try. If you need the additional help don’t worry I have a program which can help.
Diets and Binge Eating
The one thing you should never consider if you suffer from binge eating is dieting. It is the number one thing that makes the problem ten times worse. Any client with the disorder who has tried this method may well lose a few pounds in the short term but inevitably something comes along and pushes their trigger and the problem comes back with a vengeance.
Plus over-dieting is one of the major problems that cause the disorder. If you take food away from someone and make them feel hungry all the time it is inevitable that at some point they will snap and eat everything in the fridge and cupboards. Binge eaters are doing this every day. Restricting their breakfast and lunches and then wondering why they can’t stop themselves from eating everything in sight when they get home. Remember your brain is hard-wired to eat what it can if it thinks a food shortage is around the corner.
To make matters worse negative feelings also fuel those binges. So when you fail to lose weight or stop your eating you start to think there is something wrong with you or that you are a failure. The negative thoughts grow and make you feel anxious and stressed and before you know it you are back to your binges. Therapy for binge eating helps to break this cycle and also looks at how you can stop the negative feelings and thoughts.
We help our clients to eat more mindfully and connect their emotions with their food choices. You can use our Stop Binge Eating Worksheets to think about what you are eating and why.
Aversion Therapy & Binge Eating
Another approach that is less than helpful is aversion therapy for binge eating. This is when a hypnotherapist uses suggestion to make you feel sick at the thought of a particular food. The problem is that if the underlying emotional problem is still there you will just go and eat something else instead. So if I make you hate biscuits what is to stop you from eating cake as an alternative? I find aversion therapy can be useful in certain circumstances but therapy for binge eating disorder is more complex and requires a little more finesse.
Our Therapy for Binge Eating Program
I have spent over ten years creating my therapy for binge eating program. It is designed to help my clients understand the mechanics of their condition and for them to get a handle on what might be causing their binges. Once we understand the underlying causes of the condition then therapy is aimed at resolving the emotions surrounding them. We also give you resources to help you cope with any triggers in the future.
In the program I cover:
- Mindful/Intuitive Eating
- Anxiety and Stress Eating
- Binge Eating Triggers
- Emotional Regulation
- Planning
- Body Image
- Self-care
- Impulse Control
- SMART goals
- Relapse Prevention
- Resolving Root Causes
- Audio Downloads
All clients commit to a five-session program which takes place over one to two months. This program is adapted to your particular needs depending on our discussions. This is not a program that can be started and then stopped. Commitment is needed from the client as it requires you to take time out of your busy life to work on yourself. This means you need to make time to focus on creating change.
