If you were not aware April is Stress Awareness month. This month is usually used to highlight the impact that stress can have on people and advertise what can be done to help mental health. Even before the Coronavirus issues 74% of people at some point in the previous year found their stress levels so high they felt unable to cope. This number is going to blown out of the water by what is happening at the moment.

The thing about stress is that it can either hit you like a train or slowly creep up on you without you even noticing. Clearly, Coronavirus is the train but even before this illness came along plenty of people experienced high-stress levels. As an example, I spent an hour working with one of my clients by mobile phone yesterday. During our session, we were interrupted by eight people trying to call her. Replicate that in a day and she would be getting well over 100 calls or text messages! Yet at no point had my client thought about the implications of this on her stress levels.

Clearly, in the case I have just talked about my client is capable of switching off her phone for periods in the day. There are a huge number of other things I can help my client to do:

- Alter coping mechanisms such as drinking to switch off
- Show them time management practices
- Teach them to say no

- Help them avoid negative people or situations
